OVERVIEW

W-­MeMo (Water Metering and Monitoring) is an integrated solution for real time measurement and collection of water flow, pressure and quality data, both at the end user and at intermediate points along the water grid. A full or partial deployment of W-­MeMo is an enabler for advanced services such as: automated customer billing, user profiling, fraud or leakage monitoring, advanced “smart” operational and maintenance activities.

The W-MeMo solution involves three types of components: the sensor node, the gateway and the cloud software infrastructure (see installation example). The sensor node is optionally fed by a micro-turbine which makes the installation possible also in remote places, avoiding regular and inconvenient replacement of batteries. The platform is based on the Wireless M­-Bus 169MHz protocol, allowing long range and low power communication. The communication is highly secure thanks to the AES­128 encription scheme and it is ready for complete SCADA integration.

WMEMO DEMO AT TILAB OPENAIR LAB

A demo with the first fully working prototype of WMeMo was installed in 2013 at Tilab Openair Lab in Turin and can be visited on request.

MULTIFUNCTIONAL GAS AND WATER

Through its standard available input pins and with the addition of external components, the W-MeMo sensor node is capable to perform contemporaneous multiple measures. This is generally required either in apartment buildings where meters are normally installed together in a single box or in monitoring of multiple parameters of a water pipe (flow, pressure and quality).

The W-MeMo architecture is already compliant with the gas smart metering normative (UNI/TS 11291) developed by CIG (Comitato Italiano Gas).

WIRELESS ARCHITECTURE

W-MeMo is based on a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) architecture specifically targeted to utilities. The communication architecture is based on a hierarchical topology, with short-range hops (from sensor node to gateway) based on the Wireless M-Bus 169 MHz standard, and a long-range communication over 2G/3G technology, from each gateway to the cloud platform.

Wireless M-Bus (EN 13757-4:2013) has been recently proposed by the OMS group for European metering, and adopted by CIG (Comitato Italiano Gas) as official protocol for smart gas metering. The adoption of this standard allows very low energy and long range communication, thanks the low overhead, the sub-GHz frequencies and the low transmission data rate.

All W-MeMo sensor nodes are equipped with a proprietary implementation of the Wireless M-Bus standard and are fully compatible with other commercial transceivers, to ensure interoperability among devices. Moreover, the communication is highly secure thanks to the AES128 encription scheme and it is ready for complete SCADA integration.

DATA ANALYTICS

A cloud software application, designed to manage data coming from master nodes, is in charge of data management and extraction of knowledge from them. Once data are received by the application, these are stored on a remote database securely managed by DowSee and are made accessible through customizable reports both by the Utility and the End User. Computational intelligence algorithms allow estimating the location of water leakages or thefts and may be used to improve operational and maintenance activities, like valve controls, water pressure management and flow reductions.
